     Osborne House.  Ein Rückzugsort von Queen Victoria und ihrer Familie.

'On the advice of Peel they [the royal couple, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert] purchased the estate of Osborne, in the Isle of Wight. Their skill and economy in financial matters had enabled them to lay aside a substantial sum of money; and they could afford, out of their savings, not merely to buy the property but to build a new house for themselves and to furnish it at a cost of £ 200000. At Osborne, by the sea-shore, and among the woods, which Albert, with memories of Rosenau in his mind, had so carefully planted, the royal family spent every hour that could be snatched from Windsor and London – delightful hours of deep retirement and peaceful work. The public looked on with approval. … The middle-classes, in particular, were pleased. They liked a love-match; they liked a household which combined the advantages of royalty and virtue, and in which they seemed to see, reflected as in some resplendent looking-glass, the ideal image of the very lives they led themselves. Their own existences, less exalted, but oh! so soothingly similar, acquired an added excellence, an added succulence, from the early hours, the regularity, the plain tuckers, the round games, the roast beef and Yorkshire pudding of Osborne. It was indeed a model Court.'

Lytton Stracheys Biographie Queen Victoria gibt einen umfassenden Einblick in Queen Victorias Leben und mit dem Königshaus als Bezugspunkt in die politischen Entwicklungen des nach ihr benannten Zeitalters. Ein besonderer Höhepunkt sind die Porträts, die der Autor z.B. von Victorias Ehemann Prince Albert und von zeitgenössischen Staatsmännern zeichnet, wozu nicht zuletzt die sprachliche Schönheit seines Stils beiträgt, den er immer wieder auch geschmeidig seinem Gegenstand angleicht.[1]

[1] Noch empfehlenswerter, als Queen Victoria, das ja doch auch Längen hat, ist Eminent Victorians (1918), das aus 4 Porträts viktorianischer Persönlichkeiten besteht. Meine Lieblingskapitel sind ‘Florence Nightingale’ und ‘The End of General Gordon’.

        Farringford House: von 1853 bis zu seinem Tod 1892 lebte hier der englische Dichter und
        poet laureate (Hofdichter) Alfred Tennyson mit seiner Familie

Tennyson soll jeden Tag mit Hut und wehendem schwarzen Mantel 

dort hinaufgewandert sein.
